Wendy’s 1st Store to Close

A sad sad day in Columbus history.  The Original Wendy’s that Dave Thomas Opened in 1969 is set to close on March 2nd.  If you live in Columbus, check out this unique Wendy’s out.

CYA Security

As I will be battling with airport security as my new training stint happens, I have to have in mind Bruce Schneier’s Wired article regarding the ineffectual security that our government has foisted upon us.  Things like nonsensical liquid bans and more.

What this all boils down to is politicians and a populace who actually believe that they can prevent the next 9/11.  The thing is that a determined enemy can attack at will.  Laws banning liquids will only make the terrorists try another vector.  We are still taking our shoes off in security because of one guy who UNSUCESSFULLY tried to use a shoe bomb.

One thing that surprised me in my visit to Chi-Town was how easy would it be to smuggle a bomb into the subway.  Except a short time where they inspected bags in other citys, I have never seen any security on public transit in Chicago, DC or here in Columbus.   Even then, how easy would it be to walk along the tracks and plant something when the trains are not running?

Back from Chi-Town

I am back from Chi-Town and heading back there on the 4th of March. I am so glad I got the training because it’s going to come in handy in the coming months. This year will be extremely busy with the new software upgrade as well as the new hardware. I hope things will settle down a little in 2008. It’s only February and I know the rest of 2007 is going to be zooey.

Things I ate in Chicago:

The Chicago Style Hot Dog is enough to make me want to buy hot dogs again. One of the tastiest concoctions I have ever experienced. Definitely THE way to eat a dog now.

Giordano’s has the best Stuffed Pizza which I would really call Chicago Style Deep Dish. The fillings go in first then the cheese and then the sauce. Delicious!

Eppy is a eccentric man who runs Eppy’s Deli and he makes sandwiches that are out of this world. You have a choice of about 18 different mustards and all sorts of cheeses and breads. Take my advice, if you go to Eppy’s, check the menu out near the door before going to the counter. Make your decision there and walk right up and order. Don’t dwadle when ordering and if he asks what chips you want, Ghetto Chips mean Barbeque. As for what do you order, I reccomend Pastrami and Swiss on Swirled Rye, toasted to melt the cheese and brown spicy mustard. As for sides, get chips and pick one…they are all good. If it’s still cold, you can also get a cup of soup with the meal at the price of the temperature. If it’s only 1 degree outside, it’s 1 cent. If it’s -3, he gives you 3 cents off! 😀 Anyway, you can’t go wrong with Eppy’s. They even have breakfast sandwiches and bagels. Check em out and hang out and chat with Eppy. Once you get to know him, he’s not all that bad!

Hildon in Higher Then 800×480

Internet Tablet Talk has a story about the Hildon API running on a laptop!  This means hildon will scale to resolutions larger then the Nokia 770 and N800 Internet Tablets.  This also COULD man a OLPC type device.

What’s Hildon?  It’s the UI that the Nokia internet tablets use with thier Maemo install.  It’s a nice UI and it seems to be easy to understand to me anyway.

Exhausting Week…

It’s been one of those exhausting weeks that just takes all of the energy out of ya.  Hopefully my trip to Chicago will be a safe and good one.

Things I am looking forward to in Chicago:

  1. Chicago Style Hot Dogs
  2. Chicago Deep Dish Pizza
  3. The Sear’s Tower

Things I am not looking forward to:

  1. Typical Chicago Weather
  2. TSA Security
  3. Airliner crammed full of crabby people.

Anyway, hopefully I have a non-eventful week.

Super Bowl Sunday Church Presentations Messed up by NFL

I saw this up on Engadget. Aparantly the NFL sent a C&D letter to several churches planning a safe sane non alcoholic alternative party to most alcohol laced Super Bowl parties. The NFL ok’d the parties, but not until it was way too late. They also voiced their opinion on special halftime videos being shown instead of the crapfest that is the Super Bowl Halftime show. Last year with the Stones (I think that’s who it was) I could hardly hear Mick’s lyrics. Don’t know if that was horrible mixing or equipment malfunction or on purpose. It’s hard to tell. Message for the NFL:

  1. When churches charge a fee, it’s to cover the equipment rental and snacks. Churches make NO money off of it.
  2. Who do you think you are to control WHAT is talked about during the game or shown at halftime in leiu of the Victoria Secret ads and scantily clad halftime show participants. The message shown at these church gatherings for the men have brought youth as well as visiting men to Christ. What’s bad about that?
  3. Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith, the two head coaches, are both Chrisitian. There may even be a special video that was recorded by these two.
  4. These church parties are not new. The Church I used to go to had them and it was great fun and we even had prizes and a guy censoring the racy commercials. News flash NFL….sex may sell, but you don’t to show this on national TV. Thank god for the wardrobe malfunction.
  5. Now you have ticked off one of the most reliable party mechanisms…the church. Churches have power especially if they are a mega church which is increasing in popularity.

This was all for the sake of copyright. Protecting their product. Yet this single event, no matter what teams are involved, always causes a increase in revenue not just in the host city but even in places such as lowly Columbus, OH. Kroger had tons of snack food on sale and plenty of Super Bowl related merchandise and we’re MILES from either team and the last time we had a team in the big game was a long time ago unless you count Pittsburgh.

If this is not a indicator of how screwed up sports and big media is, I do not know what is!
